Ed Reed Accidentally Call Brian Billck ‘Coach Belichick’ In Hall Of Fame Speech

Ed Reed was officially enshrined in the Hall of Fame on Saturday night, becoming the third homegrown Raven to receive the sport’s highest career honor.

Reed has always operated with flair. When he received his honorary gold Hall of Fame jacket Friday night, he wore a cream-colored hat with a gold band to match his new garment. On Saturday, he wore a gold hat over his gray-streaked hair and a T-shirt that said “HAWK” across the chest. He walked to the podium with a cigar clenched between his teeth.

Reed joined the pantheon as the greatest ball-hawking safety of his era and perhaps the greatest of all time.

“I always said I wanted to become a master of my game, like Bruce Lee,” he said. “I mastered my art of football, because that’s what it truly is when you understand it.”

Reed started off his speech by thanking multiple people in the Ravens’ organization including owner Steve Bisciotti, former general manager Ozzie Newsome and coach John Harbaugh. He probably also planned to give a shout out to former Ravens coach Brian Billick — who coached Reed for six years in Baltimore — but instead, he had a slight slip of the tongue.

“There’s no place like BALTIMORE,” Reed said. “I’d like to thank that organization: Steve Bisciotti, Ozzie Newsome, Coach Belichick, his staff, Coach Harbs, his staff. It’s too many people to mention. I know I’m going to miss some people, but I love all y’all guys.”

Take a look (it starts right around the 17 second mark).

Belichick attended the festivities in Canton on Saturday and he was probably as shocked as anyone to hear his name called.

Coincidence or not, Reed’s slip comes shortly after he said he’d love to one day join the Patriots coaching staff.
