Report: Patriots Signing Jonathan Jones To Three-Year Extension

the New England Patriots traded away two young cornerbacks a week ago. The organization decided to offer contract extension to one of their other cornerbacks. The Patriots have signed Jonathan Jones to a three-year contract extension as reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The Patriots signed Jones as an undrafted agent in 2015. He played on a one-year restricted free agent tender this season.

New England traded cornerbacks Keion Crossen and Duke Dawson during their roster cuts.

“Jon’s a really good football player,” head coach Bill Belichick said of Jones last September. “He has a big role for us in our substituted defenses against multiple receivers. He does a great job in the kicking game as well, as he always has. That’s where he kind of made his mark, got started, and that’s led to a lot more opportunities for defensive playtime. He’s taken advantage of those. He’s done a really good job for us.”

2018 was Johnson’s best season. He totaled 56 tackles, three quarterback hits, 1.5 sacks, three interceptions a forced fumble and seven passes defended. In his pro career, Jones totaled 98 tackles and 2.4 sacks with 16 passes defended, four interceptions and two forced fumbles. In the playoffs, Jones shut down Chiefs star receiver Tyreek Hill in the AFC Championship game.

“I mean, you prepare hard,” the cornerback said. “You’re ready for that. He’s a great athlete, explosive, but I think coach had confidence in me and know that I’m the same athlete, same speed, same type of guy.”

Jones emerged as the Patriots’ slot cornerback in the past two seasons. Slot cornerbacks now earn more money on the open market. Kenny Moore and Justin Coleman signed four-year contracts worth upwards of $33 million with the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions. Signing Jones to a contract extension seems like a good move for the Patriots.

Jones played in three Super Bowls, and won two in this three NFL seasons.

The Patriots are always interested in locking their talented players. This is a smart decision for the team, and these smart moves actually helped the team win six championships.
