Patriots’ Benjamin Watson Says He Played Season With Torn Achilles

Tight end Benjamin Watson revealed that he played through a torn Achilles this season. He was a member of the New England Patriots. Watson decided to retire at the end of the 2018 season. Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski retired too, and the Patriots tried to replace him. This gave Watson a perfect opportunity, and he came out of retirement. Signing a deal with the Patriot was the perfect scenario.

The 39-year-old played 10 regular-season games with made eight starts. Watson had 17 receptions for 173 yards and was able to catch three passes for 38 yards in the Patriots’ AFC Wild Card Round playoff loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Watson has had similar injuries. He had a torn one in the 2016 preseason with the Baltimore Ravens. This injury kept him out of the field throughout the entire season.

The tight end missed the first four games of the regular season due to a PEDs violation. Watson was cut by the Pats, and they wanted to re-sign him a few days later. He played in every game from Week 7 on

Unlike his tenure from 2004-09, 2019 wasn’t really successful for Watson. However, he was definitely a great blocker and gave the Patriots the talent they needed to win games.

The 6’3″, 255-pound tight end will become a free agent. Has he reached the end of a 16-year NFL career? Watson spent some time with the Pats, Ravens, Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints.

The 2004 first-round pick out of Georgia was never named to the Pro Bowl, but he passed the 750-yard receiving mark on two occasions. Watson also won a Super Bowl and had a total of 547 receptions for 6,058 yards and 44 touchdowns.

The Patriots will be focused on the offense this season, and they will have to find a tight end to fill the void. If they don’t find someone to fill the position, Watson may come back. Well, he has to stay healthy for this to happen. New England needs a win, and they need high-quality players. There’s no room for mistakes now.
