Patriots Writer Lists Five Potential Cuts Entering Season

The New England Patriots lost 13 players this offseason, including Tom Brady, Kyle Van Noy, Jamie Collins and Danny Shelton. They added a bunch of talented players to the roster. The Pats surprised everyone with the signing of former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. But, it looks like head coach Bill Belichick will make a few cuts. A Patriots writer discussed this issue.

At least seven Patriots players are coming back from injured reserve. They will try to secure their place on the roster. Belichick will have to make a big decision. Center David Andrews, guard Hjlate Froholdt, linebacker Brandon King, tackle Yodny Cajuste, end Derek Rivers, receiver Gunner Olszewski and fullback Jakob Johnson want their spots back.

Guard/center Najee Toran and linebacker Terez Hall have the best chance to get a spot on the active roster.

Is the Patriots writer about this?

New England selected five players in the first three rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft. Kicker Justin Rohrwasser has a guaranteed spot on the Patriots roster. In free agency, the Patriots signed nine players who will compete for a roster spot: quarterbacks Cam Newton and Brian Hoyer, WRs Damiere Byrd and Marqise Lee, FB Dan Vitale, DT Beau Allen, OLB Brandon Copeland, S Adrian Phillips and ST/S Cody Davis.

The Patriots have 23 players for 13 spots. We don’t even count the undrafted free agents and the other players who will try to get a position. Five players may “be in danger of losing their roster spots. This includes offensive guard offensive tackle Korey Cunningham ($750,000), defensive lineman Deatrich Wise ($1.9 million), offensive guard Jermaine Eluemunor ($2.13 million), offensive tackle Marcus Cannon ($4.49 million) and Mohamed Sanu ($6.5 million).

Sanu and Cannon are great contributors. However Belichick may easily get rid of some of the players he doesn’t find useful for the upcoming season.

The Patriots will start off training camp on July 28, and this will give Newton and others like him a chance to prove their real value. Maybe Newton’s skills will be more than enough to convince Belichick to put him under center. The Patriots need Newton and everything he brings to the table.
