Bill Belichick Addresses on Patriots Quarterback Situation, Cam Newton’s Return

The New England Patriots played without veteran quarterback Cam Newton in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Newton’s coronavirus test returned positive, but he is asymptomatic. If he doesn’t show any symptoms, Newton can join his teammates by Friday. Will Newton start games with the Patriots in the near future? If not, who will start games?

Veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer had the chance to lead the team to a win. However, the Patriots benched him in the third quarter of the 26-10 loss at Arrowhead Stadium after losing a fumble in the red zone. The veteran took an ill-advised sack on the final play of the first half of the game. This cost the team a chance at a chip-shot field goal and he threw an interception.

Unlike Newton, second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham threw a touchdown pass on the first drive but tossed two picks and completed 5 of 13 passes.

The Patriots may not have Newton at quarterback

Coach Belichick discussed the quarterback situation in New England. Media members wanted to know whether he plays to put Hoyer under center.

“We’ll see how it goes,” the head coach said. “We’ll make a decision on that after we get more information on all those guys, starting with Cam.”

If Newton stays asymptomatic and returns two negative tests separated by 24 hours, the 2015 NFL MVP can arrive for practice on Thursday.

However, Ian Rapoport has a different theory.

“From what I understand, Cam Newton has not had symptoms of COVID-19,” he reported. “They mentioned this on the broadcast as well — I would just add some caution as calling someone asymptomatic because the way the virus manifests itself, he does not have symptoms today, does not have symptoms yesterday, but really could at any point.

“That is one reason why there is caution there if we assume Cam Newton does not have symptoms and theoretically if he tests (negative) twice after a five-day period, then he would be able to get back out on the field against the Broncos. The problem is that it’s determined by when the virus actually leaves his system. He had it, of course, we know on Saturday, had it late, late Friday night. Does it leave his system in time enough to get him ready for the Broncos? As of right now, it seems far-fetched, but it is possible.”
