Report: Big-Play Wide Receiver Still Kicking Around With Patriots

One particular wide receiver may be of great help for the New England Patriots in 2021. The team has several great options for the offseason, including one hidden talent.

Devin Smith.

The Patriots wide receiver has one of the most hilarious YouTube college highlight reels fans will ever see.

Almost every pass he caught at Ohio State led to a 50-yard touchdown after the speedy receiver rushed past defenders with his speed. He also used his 6-foot-1, 205-foot body to haul in 50-50 catches. However, his NFL career got stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Talented wide receiver on the Patriots roster

The New York Jets selected Smith in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He was selected 37th overall. Smith was running a 4.42-second 40-yard dash with a 1.56-second 10-yard split, 4.15-second short shuttle, 6.83-second 3-cone drill, 39-inch vertical leap and 10-feet, 2-inch broad jump at the NFL Scouting Combine and his pro day that year. The receiver caught nine passes for 115 yards and a touchdown in his rookie campaign. However, he tore his ACL later in the season.

Smith was able to catch just one pass for 20 yards after spending the first half of his second campaign on the physically unable to perform list. Smith tore the same ACL again before the 2017 season and missed the entire campaign. He didn’t play in 2018, but joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2019, offering five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown. Smith showed everyone that he has the speed and tracking ability to do the long ball.

Smith spent seven weeks as a member of the Houston Texans’ practice unit in 2020. The team released him on Nov. 10. New England added him to the practice unit on Dec. 9 and then offered him a future contract on Jan. 4. Smith is one of the eight receivers signed for the 2021 campaign. Julian Edelman, N’Keal Harry, Marqise Lee, Jakobi Meyers, Gunner Olszewski, and fellow future signees Kristian Wilkerson and Isaiah Zuber belong to the same group.

Will Smith make an impact in 2021? He is definitely a potential player to watch in the next few months.
