Ex-Patriots QBs Coach Weighs In On Cam Newton’s Free Agency

Cam Newton is entering free agency after a long season with the New England Patriots. 2020 was a bad season for the quarterback, and the Patriots failed to make the playoffs. Head coach Bill Belichick signed Newton to a one-year deal and the quarterback got the starting job right after training camp. Belichick likes his development and everything he brings to the floor.

What’s the best option for Newton?

According to Jedd Fisch, Newton should re-sign with the team. This is his opinion and his best theory for the veteran.

Fisch had the opportunity to work with Patriots quarterbacks in 2020. He left the organization to be head coach at Arizona. When asked about Newton’s free agency, Fisch said he would benefit from staying out.

“For Cam, the best opportunity for him would be to continue to be in that situation (in New England), of course,” Fisch said, via Albert Breer of The MMQB.

Cam Newton makes big decision in free agency

This scenario would appeal to the quarterback. In one of his most recent appearances on the “I Am Athlete” podcast, Newton talked about his potential signing with the Patriots, the quarterback said he would love to sign with them again.

“You’re asking me, ‘Would I go back?’ he said. “Yes, I would go back.”

This leads us all the way to the Patriots. Are they interested in getting Newton? Will Belichick give him a second chance? He was one of the least effective passers in 2020. However, he struggled with several obstacles. Newton didn’t have much time to learn the Patriots’ offense. He also got COVID and New England lacked strong pass catchers. The quarterback finished with more rushing touchdowns than passing scores.

Belichick liked Newton’s attitude and work ethic. Recent reports suggest that the Patriots haven’t ruled out re-upping Newton’s contract.

Newton and Brian Hoyer are entering free agency as unrestricted players. Jarrett Stidham and Jake Dolegala are under contract. Belichick has to do a lot of thinking now, and he will have to be careful with the decision-making process. Let’s see how will the Patriots handle their quarterback topic.
