Report: Veteran Quarterback is Patriots ‘Plan A’ For 2021 Season

The New England Patriots have several issues to handle in the offseason. Veteran Cam Newton failed to take the team to the Super Bowl in his first season with the team. This may also be his only season with the Patriots. In other words, head coach Bill Belichick needs to find another signal caller. Patriots fans have several options for the team. New England is not the only team to look for a quarterback. The Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, New Orleans Saints, Washington Football Team and several other teams deal with the same issue. According to recent sources, one particular quarterback may be joining the Patriots in 2021.

Patriots insider and Boston Sports Journal writer and owner Greg Bedard says Jimmy Garoppolo is the first option for the team. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback sustained some injuries during his time with the team. He was part of Belichick’s team for quite some time, so yes, he knows everything about the Patriots.

“From what I gather from talking to people this week, over the past week, Jimmy Garoppolo still is far and away their Plan A,” Bedard said on his podcast. “That, if they had to draw it up, exactly the optimal situation for the Patriots for this coming season, it’s Jimmy G coming back here. And of course, that’s all dependent on the 49ers doing something.”

Bedard says the 49ers would trade for Carolina Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. This would push Garoppolo straight to New England.

Garoppolo wins games when healthy. He has a 24-8 record as a signal-caller. He has a 98.9 passer rating in his professional career. Well, he struggled to stay healthy.

In 2017, Garoppolo joined the 49ers through a trade. He missed 33 games in the past few years. Ten of these games were in 2020. Garoppolo had a full season just once. In 2019, he was healthy, dominant, and strong, and his team made the Super Bowl.

Garoppolo is 29 and he can still play elite football. If the Patriots want to get him, they need to give Garoppolo strong receivers. They need players like George Kittle, Deebo Samuels, and Emanuel Sanders.
