Favorite Named For The Patriots Week 1 Starting Quarterback

Who will be the New England Patriots starting quarterback in 2021? Head coach Bill Belichick has the perfect response. He selected a quarterback with the 15th overall. Mac Jones is officially a Patriot. This leads us to the following question. Will Belichick let his rookie start games in the upcoming season?

Of course not. There’s almost zero chance for Jones to be Belichick’s starting quarterback in the upcoming season.

Right after the first round Belichick said veteran quarterback Cam Newton is “our quarterback.” Simple as that.

Yes, Patriots players will witness great competition, but Newton is the favorite to start at quarterback in September.

“Mac was available at our pick, and he was a guy we spent a lot of time with. Felt like that was the best pick at that time for us,” Belichick said. “Look forward to working with him. He’s a smart kid. He’s been in a system that’s similar to ours. We’ve had a lot of good conversations with him. I think he’ll be able to process the offense. It’s obviously going to take a lot of time. See how it goes.

“Cam’s our quarterback. Whatever time Jarrett (Stidham) or Mac are ready to challenge and compete, we’ll see how that goes. But right now for Mac, he’s just got a lot of learning in front of him. I know he’s very anxious to get going and get started on it.”

Patriots are positive about their starting quarterback

The betting odds threw out a favorite. Can you make any guesses?

Draft Kings have more details:

Patriots QB Week 1 Odds

Cam Newton -286
Mac Jones +300
Jarret Stidham +800

According to Draft Kings, Newton is the perfect bet.

“Newton might not be able to hold Jones off for the whole season, but he likely gives the Patriots a better shot at winning early in the year. Jones will have a fairly steep learning curve, much like every rookie and free agent to ever land in Foxboro, Massachusetts,” they wrote.

Newton had some struggles in 2020. The Patriots finished the 2020 season with a 7-9 record. Let’s just say we can’t blame Newton for this failure. He lacked weapons and got COVID. He didn’t have much time to prepare for the new team. The Patriots signed him in July of 2020 and Belichick forced him to compete with Stidham and Brian Hoyer.
