NFL Analyst Thinks Notable Patriots Player Could Be Cut

The New England Patriots may have their eye on one particular player and he may be cut in the upcoming period.

Head coach Bill Belichick selected Sony Michel in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. The Georgia prospect joined a good Patriots team and even helped the team win the Super Bowl that year. However, the running back hasn’t lived up to his draft billing. The 26-year-old has 2,292 career rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, and 26 catches for 258 yards through the air.

Michel struggled with injuries and the Patriots decided to decline his fifth-year contract option heading into the 2021 NFL season. Will Michel be a cap casualty before the start of the 2021 season?

Patriots player to earn a cut after the end of 2021

One NFL analysts believes that the Patriots will cut Michel.

The Patriots didn’t exercise his fifth-year option and 2021 may be his final season with the team. Damien Harris may be the starting running back for the team. New England used a fourth-rounder on Rhamondre Stevenson.

If the Patriots remove Michel, they would free up snaps for Stevenson. The team will also be able to save almost $1 million.

“New England declined to exercise Michel’s fifth-year option earlier this month, potentially making 2021 his final season with the organization. Damien Harris has the chops to be the team’s starting running back, and the Pats used a fourth-rounder on Rhamondre Stevenson, leaving Michel as a depth option at best.

Getting rid of Michel now would free up snaps to develop Stevenson and save New England almost $1 million,” Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay wrote.

Michel may not be Bill Belichick’s long-term option.

However, Belichick may not be willing to get rid of Michel at this point. He won’t cut him before the 2021 season.

This will give Michel a chance to prove himself worthy of a better role before the Patriots make a decision on his future with the team. Now is the time to shine and Michel better use this opportunity.
