REPORT: Washington Wizards Interviewed Lakers Coach About Head Coaching Job

The Washington Wizards are looking for a new head coach, and they came across a member of the Lakers’ coaching staff. According to recent reports, the Washington Wizards interviewed assistant coach Phil Handy for their top position.

Handy will turn 50 next month. He didn’t even mention his possible departure from the Lakers. However, he would love to be a head coach one day. Handy will probably have more interviews in the next period. NBA teams would love to get someone who has been on “a number of winning staffs.”

“Turning 50 next month, Phil Handy figures to be a part of other memorable runs,” wrote Kyle Goon of the Orange County Register. “While he’s made no indication that he is leaving Los Angeles, he does have ambitions to be a head coach someday. Two people with knowledge of the situation told SCNG that Handy interviewed for the Washington Wizards head coaching job last month. More such interviews are likely in the coming years for a coach who has been on a number of winning staffs.”

The Washington Wizards seek a new head coach

Handy joined the Lakers in 2019. He spent some time with the Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers.

LA lost Jason Kidd in the offseason, too. he became a head coach with the Dallas Mavericks. In other words, LA will try really hard to keep Handy in the organization. His experience is more than needed at the moment.

The Lakers are coming off a terrible season. They missed the chance to win back-to-back. The Phoenix Suns eliminated LeBron James and his teammates in the first round of the playoffs. The Lakers will probably try harder next year and they really need someone like Handy to make the big game. Of course, Rob Pelinka will probably make some changes to the roster in the offseason.

Let’s see what happens in the next few months. Will Handy leave the organization? Well, things may get an unexpected turn for everyone. One thing stands for sure. LA will see a lot of changes this summer.
