Report: Former LeBron James Teammate Campaigns for Lakers Roster Spot

The Los Angeles Lakers need all the help they can get. The Phoenix Suns eliminated them in the first round of the playoffs. General Manager Rob Pelinka is expected to trade some of the current players to get new force. LeBron James and Anthony Davis need new teammates. Guess what… A former LeBron James’ teammate is already trying to earn a spot on the Lakers roster.

NBA insider Marc Stein believes that the Lakers are trying to get a “difference-making playmaker” to join forces with LeBron and Davis. A lot of players fit in this role and the team will probably target someone who won’t need a lot of money.

Mario Chalmers was a key player of the Miami Heat team. They won a couple of championships with LeBron. Of course, Chalmers hasn’t played since 2018. He was playing in Greece recently.

Chalmers took notice of Stein’s comments and tried his chances with the team.

The 35-year-old was an excellent player during his prime. He was averaging 8.9 points per game with 35.1% shooting from three in his pro career. The Lakers need better than that. Maybe Chalmers can be a solid role player for the team. He knows LeBron and they worked really well together.

The former LeBron James’ teammate is not the only option for the Lakers

Adding Chalmers is not really a big deal right now. The team needs a stronger scorer who can hit scores when LeBron and AD don’t play. One of the options includes re-signing Dennis Schroder and hoping to get the best of him. What’s next on the list for LA?

DeMar DeRozan is also a good option. He comes from Los Angeles and the Lakers could use his 20.1 points per game. DeRozan has excellent offensive skills, but his offense is a bit weak. Truth is, DeRozan would be the most reliable third scorer the Lakers had since signing LeBron and AD.

What about Kyle Lowry?

If these options don’t work for the team, LA may take Lonzo Ball back. That’s what Stein suggests.

“Expect to eventually hear of them searching for potential pathways, however obstacle-strewn they would be, to reacquiring restricted free agent-to-be Lonzo Ball for that reason,” Stein wrote.
