Drew Bledsoe Gives His Surprising Take on Patriots Quarterback Duel

Will Cam Newton win the Patriots quarterback duel? Head coach Bill Belichick has two quarterbacks competing for the top position on the field. The New England Patriots have attracted the attention of former and current players and some of them believe Belichick should stick with his rookie.

Damien Woody and Rob Ninkovich support Mac Jones this time. What does Drew Bledose say about this? Bledsoe gave way to Tom Brady as the Patriots quarterback No.1. The former Patriots quarterback knows a lot about the veteran-rookie-quarterback dynamic.

Bledsoe would definitely love to see “Cam go a little bit.” He went on the Zach Gelb Show. When asked if Jones should be Belichick’s QB1 in Week 1, Bledsoe provided an interesting answer.

“I think they’ve got to let Cam go a little bit. And I would really like to see Cam get a full year. Last year, the cupboard was kind of empty up there, and I think everybody recognizes that now. There wasn’t a lot, in terms of weapons for him. They went and got some weapons, and I think it’d be great to see Cam get back out there and show why he was an NFL MVP.”

Bledsoe may be right about the quarterback duel

Gelb was pretty surprised. He even rebutted Bledsoe’s response and mentioned Jones’ case for starting over the 2015 NFL MVP. Bledsoe said, “We’ll see.”

Everyone is well aware of the fact that Newton had limited options in 2020. Let’s not forget that he took his Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2015.

Jones will go under center at some point of the regular season. Is there any chance for him to take the reins in the regular season? Bledsoe believes the Patriots should keep Jones sitting and wait for a year before giving him a bigger role.

“It’d also be pretty good for Mac to watch it for a year and then be ready to rock going forward. But I’d love to see Cam get a chance to get out there, get after it, and show what he can really do… I don’t think [2020] was an accurate representation of what the Patriots can be, and I certainly don’t think it was an accurate representation of what Cam can be. If they can run the ball, playaction, and then let him use his physical tools, running the ball in a more limited fashion, I think he can still be effective.”
