Patriots Practice Squad Quarterback Reportedly Signed By Washington

The New England Patriots made a lot of changes in 2021. They brought a rookie quarterback on the field and Mac Jones seems to be the right quarterback to lead the Patriots this season. Well, a Patriots practice squad quarterback will no longer be a Patriot. According to several reports, Garrett Gilbert is joining the Washington Football Team. Gilbert entered the 2021 NFL season as a member of the Patriots’ roster. He had to go though.

WFT signed the Patriots practice squad quarterback amid COVID surge

Washington is signing Gilbert off the Patriots’ practice squad Friday. The team had to make a change because its both quarterbacks tested positive for COVID-19. Washington won’t be able to use Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen in the final stretch of the regular season.

Gilbert has jet to see action with his new team. Washington will throw him on the field right away. Adam Schefter from ESPN reported that the 30-year-old will probably join the Washington Football Team as a starter for the game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The veteran quarterback will join a slim quarterback group in Washington. They already have Kyle Shurmur and Jordan Ta’amu on the practice unit.

Things don’t look too bad for the former Patriots quarterback. Gilbert knows Ron Rivera as they worked together in 2017 and 2018. Head coach Bill Belichick added Gilbert to the practice unit in the offseason. Many thought he would be a backup quarterback for the Patriots because Jarrett Stidham had to undergo a back surgery.

The Patriots have Jones at center. He won the quarterback competition in the summer. Brian Hoyer is the top backup for the first rounder. Stidham is back in the fold again. There was no room for Gilbert. He may get more chances to play in Washington.

New England is just fine without Gilbert. Jones is an excellent player and NFL analysts like his potential. He helped the Patriots hit a 9-4 record in the regular season. They are on to the Indianapolis Colts. New England has four games on the schedule. Miami Dolphins are the latest opponent for the 2020 regular season.
