Patriots Sign One of The Lowest-Rated CBs in NFL to 1-Year Deal

The New England Patriots will make a few moves in free agency. They have to reshape the roster and add valuable assets. Of course, Belichick won’t spend too much money because the Patriots don’t have a huge cap space this year. The team has already lost a few players, freeing more cap space. According to latest reports, the Patriots decided to sign Terrance Mitchell, known as one of the lowest-rated CBS in the NFL.
This was a rather surprising move because the Patriots don’t have strong cornerbacks on the roster. Stephon Gilmore left the team in 2021 and JC Jackson is signing a deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. Is Mitchell the right player to join the team? Adam Schefter from ESPN reported that Mitchell will sign a one-year deal worth $3 million.

Patriots didn’t sign the best of all CBS

In 2021, Mitchell saw action in 14 games and had just one interception with a 59.2% completion percentage. Pro Football Focus ranks him 103rd out of 116 cornerbacks (52.4). Myles Bryant ranks 76th (59.5), Jalen Mills ranks 34th (67.5), and Jackson ranks 7th with a 78.9 grade. As you may be guessing, Jalen Ramsey ranks first with a 84.4 grade. This leads us all the way to Jackson and his expectations. The former Patriots cornerback wanted Jalen Ramsey money. He became unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career so he wanted to get a nice deal.

The Patriots didn’t get someone like Ramsey, but they sure got an experienced veteran. Mitchell is in his eighth season in the NFL. He made several stops in the NFL. The Dallas Cowboys got him in 2014 and he also spent time with the Chicago Bears, Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs, and Cleveland Browns. He had two stints with the Cowboys and Texans.

In his seven seasons in the NFL, Mitchell played in 83 games with 51 starts. He had 266 tackles, one sack, eight picks, 59 passes defended, and a fumble recovery. Let’s see if this experiment works well for the Patriots.
