Patriots O-Lineman Reportedly On Shelf After Undergoing Offseason Surgery

The New England Patriots are getting ready for the final phase of their offseason program. According to latest reports, the team will be without starting guard Michael Onwenu. The o-lineman will miss this part of organized team activities after undergoing offseason surgery on his ankle. Mike Reiss from ESPN was among the first to confirm that Onwenu will miss OTAs.

The talented player suffered an injury in Week 18. He was rolled up by Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Daquan Jones. It was an unfortunate situation for Onwenu as he was already dealing with an ankle injury. He missed six snaps in the finale.

We don’t have much information about the timetable for his return. Head coach Bill Belichick has a few options on the table right now. The Patriots can replace Onwenu with a few suitable players, but fans will be waiting for his return. Veteran James Ferentz could step in as a replacement during the instructional and non-padded OTA practices. He is not the only option for the Patriots at the moment. Chasen Hines, Bill Murray, and Kody Russey may join the group. The same goes to rookies Jake Andrews, Sidy Sow, and Atonio Mafi.

O-lineman undergoes surgery, still has time to recover for 2023 season

Losing Onwenu is a big blow for the Patriots. He was the best offensive lineman last season, allowing just one sack and two quarterback hits in 17 starts with the team.

Onwenu has to get healthy in order to replicate the success he had in 2020. He will enter the final year of his rookie contract and the team needs him healthy and strong.

Patriots will have the first preseason game on Aug 10. The NFL has released the schedule for the 2023 NFL season and Belichick has to prepare his team for another tough season. The Philadelphia Eagles will arrive in New England for the Week 1 game on Sept. 10. This gives Onwenu plenty of time to rest and get ready for a spectacular performance. Let’s see what happens in a few months.
