Lakers Icon Magic Johnson Interested in Knicks Ownership

Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson may be out of the basketball court, but he follows every change in the NBA. He was the Lakers director of basketball operations a few years ago and helped Jeanie Buss get LeBron James on the team. Now Magic Johnson plans to buy a minority stake in the New York Knicks.

This story made some strong headlines and fans can’t stop talking about it. The basketball icon likes the idea of owning a chunk of the franchise and the Knicks seem like a good franchise to start with. Moreover, Johnson said NY is probably the only thing he could think when it comes to joining the ownership.

“I think it would be intriguing,” Johnson said in an interview with The Associated Press. “The only team I would actually probably think about is the New York Knicks.”

Johnson has been linked to several teams in the past, including the Golden State Warriors. He also had a chance to buy stakes in the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. Well, he was loyal to the Lakers and this was not even an option back then.

Magic Johnson prefers the Knicks over other NBA teams

New York has strong fanbase and being part of the Madison Square Garden sure sounds great. Johnson has yet to have a meeting with the Knicks to discuss this potential plan.

“I think because of the way fans love basketball you might have to think about that one because I love coming to New York and going to the Garden and watching the Knicks play,” Johnson said in an interview with The Associated Press. “I love being with fans who are so passionate about their team, and the Knick fans are, and they’re smart. They’re smart basketball fans and so that one I would have to think about. I think that other than that, I would probably never think about ever being a part of another franchise.”

James Dolan made people thing that he’d never sell the team, however, he may soon consider selling a minority stake in the Knicks.

“That one you would really have to think about, in terms of being a minority owner of that team,” Johnson told AP. “But other than that, I would just stay with the Lakers and even with my role now, just being a fan, I’m happy just doing that with the Lakers because, again, I bleed purple and gold.”
