Patriots Advised To Trade Veteran Back To Eagles

The New England Patriots have a 5-2 record at this point of the regular season. Head coach Bill Belichick credited offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien for the success in the 29-25 win over the Buffalo Bills. Will he still consider making changes to the roster? According to Brad Spielberger from Pro Football Focus, the Patriots should trade veteran Jalen Mills back to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Spielberger would trade the versatile veteran and a 2024 seventh-rounder for a late-round pick. He also noted that Mills is not really happy with his snap share, so he would probably be happier back home. Of course, the Eagles may not give him more snaps, but “starting slot cornerback Avonte Maddox was likely lost for the season with a torn pectoral muscle, and safety Reed Blankenship is currently dealing with an injury and didn’t suit up in Week 7.”

Mills could ease some of the pain in Philadelphia and use his versatility to help them elevate their game.

Patriots could call the Eagles and trade their veteran

The Patriots acquired Mills for a reason. Do they have a reason to let him go? He posted a “63.7 coverage grade in 2023 with snaps all over the secondary. He is a solid run defender who is willing to throw his body around, currently earning a 77.7 run-defense grade on a small sample,” per Spielberger.

This could be a good reason for the Eagles to agree to a deal and get him back. Instead of sticking with the 29-year-old, the Patriots may be more interested in a draft pick. The trade deadline is already here and Belichick has to make a decision before October 31.

Mills would gladly see more playing time in the regular season. He wasn’t happy when he got 10 snaps in Week 5. It was all over social media! Belichick brought J.C. Jackson to New England, cutting down the role Mills had with the team.

The Patriots have enough power on the defensive end of the field at this point of the season. They don’t really need Mills that much.
