Devin McCourty Reveals HC Jerod Mayo Offered Him Job On Patriots

The New England Patriots will have a different coaching staff in 2024. Jerod Mayo is the new Patriots head coach and he is already getting the best assistants on his squad. Replacing Bill Belichick won’t be easy, but Mayo is not trying to be the new Belichick. He respects his legacy and everything he has accomplished over the last two decades. Mayo is determined to make things work for the Patriots and even invited Tom Brady and Devin McCourty to join his staff.

Mayo never closed the door for Brady’s return and he would love to have the GOAT coach at the Patriots sideline. The head coach is joining forces with a group of talented former players and McCourty is on his list.

Mayo is taking a different approach all while welcoming former Patriots players. Is McCourty willing to join his squad? The former Patriots veteran talked about the open offer Mayo made and offered his honest take.

“I’m old and washed up. He tried to get me to coach,” McCourty told Kay Adams on “Up & Adams” on Tuesday. “That’s his thing with all the older guys. He said, I don’t know if I’ll welcome them back playing, but we got a spot for them on the staff. But those hours aren’t meant for my life right now.”

McCourty wouldn’t be the only former player to become a Patriots coach

Most of the other “older guys” didn’t mind joining the Patriots organization again. Tiquan Underwood is an assistant wide receivers coach. Dont’a Hightower is an inside linebackers coach. Matthew Slater embraced an advisory role with the Patriots. Add James White to the mix as well. He is not a member of the coaching staff, but he’d definitely consider being part of it. During his appearance on the “Off the Pike with Brian Barrett” podcast, White said he had “always thought about being a coach.”

Watching all those former players coaching new guys will be the most entertaining aspect of the game.
