Patriots’ Mohamed Sanu To Undergo Offseason Surgery

Mohamed Sanu will have to undergo surgery to fix the problem he had in 2019. The talented wideout struggled with his ankle injury, and it looks like there’s only one solution to his problem.

The talented wideout will have his surgery this offseason. Sanu suffered the ankle sprain in mid-November. It didn’t heal properly as confirmed by Adam Schefter from ESPN.

Sanu sustained the injury returning a punt during the Week 11 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. It was his third game with the Patriots. Sanu joined the team through a midseason trade from the Atlanta Falcons. The veteran wideout had 10 catches on 14 targets for 81 yards and a touchdown in the team’s previous contest. The injury he sustained affected his performance on the field.

The wideout missed just one game and was removed from the injury report. He caught just 13 catches on 29 targets for 110 yards and no touchdowns in the last six games of the season. This includes a five-target, one-catch performance in the Patriots Wild Card loss to the Tennessee Titans.

There were some bad drops by Sanu. He was the team’s primary punt return despite his minimal experience in that position.

Mohamed Sanu will recover fast from his surgery

Sanu is considered a natural fit for the Patriots offense. Head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady had words of praise for the wideout. Sanu has one year remaining on his contract, and he will make $6.5 million in salary in 2020.

Sanu’s deal includes no dead money, and he has been mentioned as a cap casualty this offseason. We don’t have much information about the timetable for his recovery.

The Patriots’ receiving unit consists of Sanu, Julian Edelman, second-year pros N’Keal Harry, Jakobi Meyers, and Gunner Olszewski, and 2019 practice squadders Devin Ross and Quincy Adeboyejo. The team will probably add more players to that group this offseason through free agency, the trade market and/or the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Patriots will have to add more power to their receiving squad. Sanu and Edelman won’t be enough for the 2020 season. Is there any chance for Antonio Brown to join the Pats?
