Report: League Source Provides Details On Julian Edelman’s Future With The Patriots

No one thought that Tom Brady would ever leave the New England Patriots. He was the pillar of the organization. New England won six Super Bowls thanks to Brady’s power on the field. But, TB12 and the organization couldn’t reach an agreement, so the quarterback took his talents to Tampa Bay. Brady signed a two-year contract with the Buccaneers, and there’s zero chance for him to return to Foxboro as a Patriots player. Brady’s departure has triggered an avalanche of reactions, and fans have started discussing Julian Edelman’s future with the Patriots.

Edelman isn’t leaving the Patriots. A league source talked to Tom E. Curran from NBC Sports, revealing that there is “not a chance in hell” that the Pats would give up on Edelman this offseason.

Edelman’s future with the Patriots is clear

Shipping Edelman somewhere else may make sense for the organization. But, the Patriots haven’t even thought of it. Bill Simmons and Colin Cowherd added fuel to the fire, suggesting that Edelman may join Matt Patricia and the Detroit Lions. Although this looks like a bold move, we believe that Bill Belichick isn’t ready to part ways with his star wideout.

Edelman was the best pass-catcher in 2019. Trading the star wideout before June 1 would give the Patriots extra $4.3 million salary cap space. This move would also leave behind $5.3 million in dead money. If the Patriots wait until that date to hit a deal, they’d have $7 million in cap savings and $2.7 million in dead money. Let’s not forget the extra $2.7 in 2021.

How does the Top 51 rule factor in this situation? Cap expert Miguel Benzan offered a good explanation.

The Patriots have $1.1 million in available salary cap space. They may use Edelman in a different equation. New England has No. 23 and No. 87 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft. Head coach Bill Belichick traded the second-rounder for Mohamed Sanu last season.

Edelman will soon turn 34. The shoulder surgery is also here. What would Belichick get through his trade?

The next couple of seasons will be really challenging for the Patriots. Devin McCourty is positive about the team’s future though.
