Jarrett Stidham Isn’t Cam Newton’s Biggest Threat for Patriots Quarterback No. 1

Cam Newton and Jarrett Stidham will compete for the starting job in New England. However, analysts believe that the second-year quarterback isn’t the biggest threat Newton will have in his first season with the Patriots. Andy Hart from WEEI has something to say about this. When will Bill Belichick pick the Patriots starting quarterback?

Hart discussed Newton’s chance to replace Tom Brady in September. Well, Hart didn’t mention Stidham’s name and pointed out to the biggest threat Newton will have in the upcoming season with the Patriots.

“No, that competition isn’t some existential battle with the memory of departed GOAT Tom Brady,” Hart started. “Nor is it a real-world race with second-year former fourth-round pick and fellow Auburn alum Jarrett Stidham, even if the young incumbent does have the minimal advantage of a year under his belt living the football life in New England. It certainly isn’t a fight to play with journeyman backup Brian Hoyer. Nope. The only man that Newton is competing with for the Patriots starting quarterback job – for the right to be the man to replace Brady in the record books after TB12’s historic 20-year record run in Foxborough – is himself.”

Will Newton be the Patriots starting quarterback in 2020?

Newton has been part of the league for nine years. Stidham has thrown four passes in the NFL. The former Carolina Panthers quarterback won the NFL MVP in 2015 and won the Heisman trophy at Auburn.

The only obstacle Newton will have in 2019 will be his health condition. He has to stay healthy in the upcoming training camp. He has to stay healthy in 2020. Newton is 31 and he has excellent experience. The Patriots will need more of that in 2020. They need Newton healthy.

Health has been a major concern for the quarterback in the past few years. Newton had two surgeries to fix his body. In 2019, the Panthers put him on the injured reserve list and Newton played just two games. The team cut him in March, and Newton wasn’t able to find a home in the league.

Stidham should be more worried about Brian Hoyer. Newton may win the starting job, and Stidham should better focus on getting the backup quarterback position.

Is Stidham a better option than Hoyer? He has to show the team that he gives the Pats a better chance to win the game. Let’s see how will Bill Belichick solve this puzzle.
