Devin McCourty Reveals His Retirement Plans, Future With Patriots

Veteran safety Devin McCourty shared his thoughts on the upcoming season and his Patriots future. The 33-year-old went on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show to talk about his retirement. The New England Patriots have two games left on their schedule. McCourty will soon finish his 11th season with the Patriots.

“I think it’s always tough when you get down to the end of the year to start talking about the future, but for right now, I’m still enjoying football,” he said. “I plan on playing next year. Just trying to finish out these two games the best way I can. Then when the offseason hits, evaluate and doing all of that stuff. But still feel pretty healthy and love going out there and competing.”

McCourty has a key role in the Patriots defense. He played 100 percent of defensive snaps in 11 of the Patriots’ 14 games and a team-high 98.4 percent overall. Cornerback J.C. Jackson ranks second at 84.3 percent.

Devin McCourty is excited about his Patriots future

The Patriots co-captain hasn’t missed a game since the 2015 season. He ranks among the top three in New England defenders in snaps played.

McCourty had 56 tackles, six passes defended, and two interceptions in 2020, including a pick-six. He had a touchdown on a blocked field goal.

The safety has one season left on the two-year deal he signed with the Patriots. He signed his $23 million contract this past spring. McCourty’s 2021 salary cap hit of $11.15 million is third-highest on the team. He stands right behind cornerback Stephon Gilmore with $17.2 million and linebacker Dont’a Hightower with $12.4 million.

Head coach Bill Belichick would gladly add McCourty to his roster in 2021. He needs talented veterans with great leadership skills. McCourty is a favorite name in the locker room and his Patriots fans really like him.

The 2020 NFL season was pretty disappointing for the Patriots. They were eliminated from the playoffs. It was a long season filled with mistakes and injuries. New England played with a new quarterback under center. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton had some struggles on the field and he may not stay around in 2021.
