Conflicting Reports on Cam Newton Patriots Future Revealed

Sunday’s win over the New York Jets didn’t help the New England Patriots make the postseason. The team will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Veteran quarterback Cam Newton will probably leave the Patriots in the near future. That’s what some of the reports suggest.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that New England is expected to part ways with Newton following Sunday’s win over the Jets.

Newton talked to media members on New Year’s Eve and sounded like someone who doesn’t expect to re-join the Patriots in 2021. One thing stands for sure. Newton would love to return to the field in the 2021 NFL season.

The 2015 NFL MVP signed a one-year contract with the team in July. Head coach Bill Belichick talked about the most recent reports on Newton’s future with the team. His response surprised many.

Belichick doubted the report and asked if it was one of the anonymous reports.

Cam Newton to leave the Patriots in the future

Newton looked great in his final game of the regular season. Many would agree that it was his best game of the season. The starting quarterback accounted for all four of the team’s touchdowns on the day. He threw 3 touchdown passes and had a catch for a score on a touchdown pass from Jakobi Meyers.

The veteran complete 21 of 30 passes for 242 yards with no interceptions or turnovers overall. These 242 yards were the quarterback’s 4th highest total of 2020. Newton’s 70% completion rate was the 4th best of the season. This game marked the fourth time this season Newton stacked 30 or more pass attempts. New England was 2-2 in these games and Newton played well in each contest.

The first one happened in Week 2. In this game, the quarterback lost to the Seattle Seahawks 35-30. However, Newton threw for 397 yards and a touchdown with one pick. The veteran also ran for 2 touchdowns. Will this be enough to earn him a spot in the upcoming season? NFL experts believe that Newton will have to look for a home somewhere else.
