NFL Insider Provides Update on Cam Newton Chances of Return to Patriots

The New England Patriots will enter the 2021 NFL season with a new quarterback. Or not? There are several rumors about Bill Belichick’s team, and one of them includes veteran Cam Newton and his return to the Patriots.

New England missed the playoffs for the first time in a decade. Many thought that Belichick would get rid of Newton and bring a new player under center. Newton had a lot of struggles in 2020. He is an excellent player, but things didn’t work that well for him. The 2015 NFL MVP had hard time getting used to the new system. Moreover, the Patriots didn’t give him enough weapons.

Will Cam Newton return to the Patriots

As we all know, Belichick will do the best for his team. Bring back Newton? Why not? Mike Giardi from NFL Media made a prediction on Newton’s return to New England.

“Thirty-five, 40 percent. I understand, I don’t have much of an appetite for it,” he said during an appearance on WEEI’s “Dale & Keefe” show. “I think there is a fair amount of the fanbase that doesn’t have much of an appetite for it. But, in talking to a lot of people in and around the building, there was the sense, and I think (you could say), he barely got any time to get any run-up in this offense. Signing in June and trying to speak a language that had been written for over 20 years with Charlie Weis and Josh McDaniels and Bill O’Brien and back to Josh, of course, Tom Brady being one of the authors of that as well. Trying to learn that and learn it on the fly, and obviously in as odd of a season as we’ve ever had, was very difficult to do.

“Yet, at the end of it, 7-9. It obviously wasn’t good enough, but 7-9 and ‘Boy, we realized we needed more weapons, so if we add more pieces in the passing game and Cam has a full offseason, are we 9-7? Are we 10-6? Can we make a jump?’ I think that’s something they are having to consider there in Foxborough.”

New England can do much better than that. There are greater options on the market. Belichick may draft a future quarterback. He may also trade for a big name. But, he can also re-sign Newton to another short-term deal.

The Patriots will enter a highly anticipated season, and players have to play their best football. They also need more talent on the roster.
