Patriots Re-Sign Fullback Jakob Johnson To One-Year Contract

The New England Patriots are trying to build a superteam and now they have added a familiar name. According to recent sources, the Patriots signed fullback Jakob Johnson to a one-year deal. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, shared the information with Adam Schefter from ESPN.

The fullback was an exclusive rights free agent. He couldn’t negotiate with other teams once the team tendered him. He will now get the NFL minimum.

Johnson joined the Patriots through the International Pathway Program in 2019. He was born in Germany. The 26-year-old played in every game last season. Head coach Bill Belichick used him as James Develin’s successor. Johnon served as a lead blocker. In 2020, he caught eight passes for 35 yards and one touchdown.

Patriots to give Jakob Johnson a good role

Danny Vitale will probably return from the opt-out. In other words, Johnson will face a healthy competition for the roster spot in the summer. Second-year tight end Dalton Keene may play a big role in the fullback battle. He was an H-back at Virginia Tech.

Keene and 2020 third-round draft pick Devin Asiasi will see some struggles in 2020. Belichick spent a lot of money on newly-signed tight ends. Well, he got the best tight ends in the NFL. Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith are stars and Belichick got them for a reason. These two are expected to make a big impact on the game. They are more than excited to share the same field. Hunter was pleasantly surprised last week. He really liked the idea of seeing Smith in a Patriots uniform. The team contacted him, too, and he signed his deal.

Belichick will have to cut some of the players. Some of them will have to go. Final roster trimmings are scary for veterans and young talents. Belichick missed the playoffs in 2020 and he won’t go through the same again. He signed a good group of players and he is not done yet. NFL experts have made some predictions about the Patriots and their future moves.
