Report: Dennis Schroder Rejected 4-Year, $84 Million Contract Extension From Lakers

Dennis Schroder was all in when It comes to signing a long-term contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. The German native wanted to get a big deal in the offseason. The Lakers front office has finally made an offer. What did Schroder do?

He is trying to get big money. That’s all. Windhorst discussed Schroder’s situation on Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective podcast. According to him, the veteran turned down the contract extension. The Lakers offered him a four-year deal worth $84 million.

“What I have been told, and this rumor is pretty widely out there so I doubt this is very surprising, is it the Lakers did indeed offer him that $84 million over four years,” Windhorst said. “Now this is where we get into gray area: Was it fully guaranteed? Was it partially guaranteed? Were there incentives?”

Jovan Buha from the Athletic reported that the Lakers wanted to trade Schroder to the Toronto Raptors in order to get Kyle Lowry. So, LA is willing to trade the veteran. Did they try hard enough to make him stay in LA?

The Lakers got Schroder from the Oklahoma City Thunder for Danny Green and the draft rights to Jaden McDaniels in the offseason.

Schroder will earn $16 million for the 2020-21 season. It’s the final season of his current deal. Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN reported last month Schroder wants “well over $20 million a year” on his next contract.

Wojnarowski added that LA “would like to free up some of that money they owe down the line to put themselves in position to keep the guys they have there.”

The Lakers have LeBron James and Anthony Davis signed to max deals. Young Kyle Kuzma has $13 million guaraneed in each of the next couple of seasons. He also has a $13 million player option for the 2020-23 NBA season.

Schroder was part of the starting lineup in all 43 games he played this year. He’s averaging 15.4 points on 43.6 percent shooting, 4.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game.
