Potential Quarterback Pick Does ‘Check Plenty of the Patriots Boxes’

The New England Patriots have a chance to select future Hall of Famers in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft. There’s also a chance for head coach Bill Belichick to trade up and get a top quarterback prospect. That’s not all. There’s one particular player who checks “a lot of the Patriots boxes.” The potential star quarterback may be making his way to the Patriots.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you Kellen Mond.

Mond was brilliant at his Pro Day and it came on the heels of the players’ Senior Bowl MVP performance last month.in other words, his stock is on the rise. Bernd Buchmasser from Pats’ Pulpit sees great interest from Belichick’s Patriots.

“Mond is a work in progress, but he does check plenty of the Patriots’ boxes: he is coming from a pro-style system, has played plenty of football against high-quality competition, and steadily improved throughout his college career while bringing a solid technical foundation to the table,” Buchmasser wrote. “His ceiling might be below that of other potential dual-threat quarterbacks, but he has some solid tools to work with and might present good value for New England on the second or early third day of the draft — if only to push [Jarrett] Stidham and [Jake] Dolegala from the developmental backup position.”

A potential star quarterback to join the Patriots

Belichick doesn’t usually lose several picks, including two first-rounders, for an unproven player. The Patriots will have to give up on these assets to trade up the draft to get someone like Justin Fields or Trey Lance. Mond makes more sense for the Patriots.

Matt Miller from The Draft Scout has words of praise for the Texas A&M signal-caller.

“Kellen Mond won’t slip out of Round 2. The former Texas A&M quarterback started for four years in the SEC and has the combination of arm strength and mobility that will get him drafted earlier than most expected when the season ended. He can thank a very good Senior Bowl week and the needs across the league at quarterback for his rise.”

The Patriots will probably trade back from the No.15 pick to get Mond in the first round or early in the second. Belichick may also use his No. 46 pick and a fourth-rounder to go higher in the second round to make sure he gets Mond.

Dane Brugler from The Athletic reported that Mond is a player who accepts “hard coaching” really well.

The Patriots brought Cam Newton back for another season. He will probably compete with Jarrett Stidham again. A rookie quarterback would probably go at No.3 or a backup if the Patriots release the loser of this competition.
