Head Coach Jerod Mayo Gives Insight Into Patriots’ First Round Draft Approach

The New England Patriots enter the most important draft in team history. They have the highest pick in years and the organization has to play smart with the No.3 overall. Team owner Robert Kraft wasn’t really happy with the outcome in the last few seasons. Head coach Bill Belichick parted ways with the organization, leaving enough room for Jerod Mayo to step in. NFL analysts dropped a few potential scenarios for the Patriots and their first round plans, and Mayo got really honest.

The Patriots will have a chance to use a third overall pick for the first time in over 30 years. They cannot make any mistakes at this point and Mayo will have to embrace one of the biggest challenges in his career.

Patriots HC Mayo relies on multiple options for the first round

Mayo seems to be confident about the upcoming draft and his expectations. According to the new Patriots head coach, the Patriots cannot afford a mistake at this point.

“Eliot (Wolf), has the final decision, but at the same time, there’s a lot that goes into that final decision,” Mayo said. “It’s kind of like a call sheet. You get to a game with a call sheet, it’s really already done. There’s no bad play on a call sheet. The one benefit of being at three is that if we like the top five quarterbacks, we’ll have our pick at No. 3. It doesn’t really matter — that’s kind of how we’re looking at it.”

The Patriots can play with their picks and go down the draft to get players who work better for their 2024 plans. They don’t have to use the third overall pick. If this happens, the Patriots will enjoy more benefits from teams who go after their first-round pick. There are two potential scenarios. New England can grab a top prospect or secure a bunch of alternative options. Now is the perfect time to play wise and obtain great capital.
