Robert Kraft Has Strong Words for Bill Belichick’s Draft History

The New England Patriots played really strong in free agency. Head coach Bill Belichick had an aggressive approach and he brought a lot of players a couple of weeks ago. New England is about to make similar moves in the upcoming draft. Patriots owner Robert Kraft discussed the team’s draft history.

Kraft talked to the media last week and discussed several topics. He made some strong comments on the recent draft picks.

“In the end, if you want to have a good, consistent, winning football team, you can’t do it in free agency. You have to do it through the draft. I don’t feel we’ve done the greatest job the last few years and I really hope, and I believe, I’ve seen a different approach this year.”

The Patriots finished 2020 with a 7-9 record. It was a losing season for the team and both Belichick and Kraft won’t let it happen again.

John Breech of CBS Sports shared his thoughts on the Patriots’ draft selections.

“The fact that the Patriots haven’t been able to find a Pro Bowler in the draft is slightly more understandable, but still a little embarrassing. Due to their immense success over the past six years — they’ve played in four Super Bowls and won three of them — the Patriots have regularly been picking at the bottom of the first round. Patriots coach Bill Belichick loves to wheel-and-deal in the draft, which usually ends with him making trades where he surrenders his higher picks for more picks in lower rounds. Also, Belichick is always emphasizing the fact that football is a team game and that everyone needs to do their job, which makes it difficult for individual players to get showcased, especially young players.”

Coach Belichick traded out of the first round in 2020. The Patriots had the 23rd selection back then. He sent the pick to the Los Angeles Chargers and they got Kenneth Murray. New England had the 37th and 71st pick in the process. They signed Kyle Dugger with the 37th pick and moved the 71st and 98th selection to the Baltimore Ravens while going up to No.60 to get Josh Uche.

This leads us all the way to Michael Onwenu. The team got him in the sixth round.
