Patriots Veteran Quarterback Gets Discouraging Injury News

The New England Patriots brought Jake Dolegala and analysts were surprised by Bill Belichick’s decision to have five quarterbacks on the field. Well, it looks like one of his signal-callers will be out of the game for a long time. Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham ended up on the physically unable to perform list and he will stay there a little longer due to his injury.

Jeff Howe from The Athletic and other sources confirmed that Stidham has problems with his throwing shoulder. According to this, Stidham won’t see any action in the first few weeks of the new season. Here’s what he wrote:

“Jarrett Stidham’s summer might be over before it started. The New England Patriots quarterback has been experiencing pain in his right shoulder and back while throwing the football, according to sources. Surgery has been noted as a possibility, and it remains unclear how much more time he’ll miss. Stidham was placed on the physically unable to perform list last week when he reported to Gillette Stadium for training camp and didn’t participate Wednesday in the opening practice. The Patriots then claimed quarterback Jake Dolegala off waivers from the Green Bay Packers, as a source indicated Stidham’s return wasn’t imminent.”

Patriots quarterback unit is still thick despite Stidham’s injury

The timing is horrible. Stidham will literally miss the chance to beat Cam Newton and Mac Jones and go under center. Even if the Patriots don’t release him while he recovers, Stidham may easily end up on the trade block.

One thing stands for sure. Stidham is most out-of-place signal caller for the Patriots. Newton will probably start games in September. Of course, Jones will take the lead if Newton falls apart in training camp and preseason. Jones will be the franchise quarterback at some point. Belichick brought him for a reason. If Newton fails to do the job, Jones will definitely step in as a replacement. Brian Hoyer is not an option as he was re-signed to mentor the rookie.

Belichick will have to make a few calculations to pick the right quarterback option for the 2021 NFL season.
