Report: Stephon Gilmore “Open to” New Option to Remain With Patriots

Veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore has to make a decision regarding his contract with the New England Patriots. According to recent reports, the former Defensive Player of the Year has another great option on the table.

Gilmore wants to get a better contract and a nice extension. This would motivate him to stay with the Patriots on the long run. The negotiations got stuck in the middle nowhere, and Gilmore skipped spring practice.

Mike Giardi from NFL.com has an update on Gilmroe and his contract situation.

“On Stephon Gilmore…I’m told his side is open to a multi-year extension but would also be willing to take a one year jump in salary – with free agency looming next season – to make this work. There is still time to hammer out an agreement. #Patriots vets aren’t due until 7/27.”

Will Stephon Gilmore stay with the Patriots?

The Patriots did the same thing in 2020. Jalen Ramsey got his brilliant deal with the Los Angeles Rams and Tre’Davious White made headlines with his big cash. Gilmore wasn’t in the top 10.

New England gave the veteran a $5 million pay raise.

Here’s what Kevin Patra reported:

“The move bumps Gilmore’s 2020 salary from $10.5 million to $15.5 million with a chance to get to $17.5 million if he wins DPOY again. The 29-year-old has two years left on his contract with the Patriots. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo noted that the Patriots moved salary from 2021 into 2020, per a source. We’ve seen salary borrowed from future years in the past to help keep players happy without completely reworking their contract — the Falcons did this with Julio Jones back in 2018. Gilmore’s future in New England would likely be addressed next year.”

Head coach Bill Belichick may not give Gilmore a long-term extension. Maybe he will bring him back for another season. What about Gilmore’s quad injury? He missed the games in the last few weeks of the season. Will this affect his situation?

Gilmore is one of the best cornerbacks in NFL history. However, he didn’t earn too much money in the last few years.
