HC Bill Belichick Breaks Down Film Of Patriots No. 3 Selection Drake Maye

The New England Patriots had an opportunity to make a wise move regarding their No.3 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and that exactly what happened. NFL analysts discussed multiple scenarios related to the Patriots’ highest pick in the last 30 years. The team didn’t shut down any option. Former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick discussed their decision to use the third overall pick to get North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.

The Patriots were expected to make a move for Maye as he really looked like someone who can take the lead. The talented quarterback has the right size and skills to become a starting quarterback. Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo will probably throw him in a quarterback competition, just like Belichick did in the last few seasons. Maye can make this happen if he beats Jacoby Brissett, Bailey Zappe, and Nathan Rourke.

Belichick embraced a different role this year and he seems to be enjoying it. A lot of fans were surprised to see him talk about the Patriots’ moves in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, but it’s all part of his new role.

“Drake compares himself a lot to Josh Allen.… we’ll see about that. I think there are some comparisons with size and athleticism, but Josh Allen is a pretty special player,” Belichick said on the Pat McAfee Show Draft Spectacular on YouTube.

Belichick was honest about Maye and his role with the Patriots

Maye is an excellent player who can accomplish a lot in the NFL. Belichick would love to see more from him in the future and see how experience changes his performance.

“A very talented kid. Good size, runs well, has a good arm. Just he hasn’t played very much. He really doesn’t have a lot of experience. He makes some big plays,” Belichick added. “He’s gonna need some work in reading defenses, reading coverages.”

The NFL world had a lot to say about Maye. Fans had different opinion and Belichick offered his professional analysis.

“He’s kind of quick to bail out of the pocket. He’s gonna have to hang in there a little bit longer to find those receivers. … This is a kid who can make all of the throws. He just needs to be more consistent. … Transitioning from a college quarterback to a pro quarterback, he’s just going to need some time and experience.”
