Bill Belichick Uses 1 Word To Adress Quarterback Competition

Third-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham underwent a back surgery to fix his issue, leaving the New England Patriots with four quarterback options on the field. Brian Hoyer, Cam Newton, Mac Jones, Jake Dolegala… Head coach Bill Belichick has to make a decision on his starting quarterback and he follows the unfolding competition in New England.

NFL analysts are really interested in this competition. Newton seems to be stronger than ever and he is giving his best to secure his job. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels watched Newton throughout the entire offseason and he really likes the rejuvenated version of the signal-caller. Belichick gave Newton a chance to show off. He even said that Newton is the Patriots signal caller at the moment. Maybe the 2015 NFL MVP will start games in September and let Jones finish the job. I mean, the rookie is doing an excellent job in training camp. Belichick got him 15th overall. He had a good reason to do that.

Bill Belichick likes the quarterback competition

In a one-on-one interview with Willie McGinest from NFL Network, Belichick said the quarterback competition in New England has been “healthy” so far. What does that mean?

“Cam’s getting better every day. Mac’s getting better every day. They’re pushing each other,” Belichick told McGinest. “I think competition makes us all better. So it’s been healthy, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Newton has a tiny advantage in the competition, but Belichick really likes Jones.

“Mac’s competing well,” Belichick said. “I’d say really all of our rookies are doing a good job. They’ve embraced the process. They know they have a lot to learn, a long way to go. They’ve worked hard. They’ve studied hard. They’re certainly not there yet, but they’ve gained a lot of ground from back when we started in the middle of May.”

The Patriots may choose to start Jones to see his real game. If he doesn’t start Week 1, New England will sure put Newton on under center. Jones has to be ready for the big job.

Newton struggled in 2020, but he is changing the approach now, and we can see him take the lead in 2021.
