Cam Newton Provides Brutally Honest Admission On Mac Jones Competition

Head coach Bill Belichick packed his quarterback unit with talent. Tom Brady is no longer part of the team and Belichick has several options to choose from. The best part of the whole quarterback competition is the fact that these players really respect each other. Cam Newton will probably win this competition, but he has nothing but words of praise for rookie quarterback Mac Jones.

Patriots quarterbacks are great competitors. Jones is probably the quarterback of the future and Belichick may throw him in the mix to see his strong side. Jarrett Stidham saw some action last season but it wasn’t enough. He underwent back surgery to fix his problem. In other words, he is out of the equation at the moment.

Cam Newton says Mac Jones is cool

The 2015 NFL MVP talked to the media Friday and revealed a few things about the “Patriot Way.” As you may be guessing, competing against other Patriots players is part of the game. Newton explained that the final goal of the competition is to improve everyone on the roster. This also includes other quarterbacks.

“Ever since I’ve been here, there’s been a quarterback competition,” Newton said, via NESN. “I think in essence, that’s the underlying Patriot Way. Every position has a competition there, and the quarterback position is no different…Brian Hoyer is supposed to make me better. I’m supposed to make Mac Jones better. Mac Jones is supposed to make Brian Hoyer better. And you can’t forget about (Jake) Dolegala and even (Jarrett Stidham), that’s in the balance… But for us, it’s just the mentality to have that championship mental toughness each and every day, and the desire to get better.”

What did Newton say about Mac ‘n Cheese? He noted that the rookie signal caller is “cool like the other side of the pillow.” Simple as that. According to Newton, Jones is so chill that he can never tell whether the rookie is angry, upset, or excited.

“You never know when he’s really down on himself. You don’t really necessarily know when he’s up, either. He’s real cool…” Newton said.

The veteran is not really worried about his job at the moment. Jones has a lot to learn and he is working with Brian Hoyer to sharpen his performance. Of course, this doesn’t mean that Belichick can’t change his mind at some point of the 2021 NFL season.
