Brian Hoyer Shares Insight Into His Mentoring Of Patriots Rookie Mac Jones

Third-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham underwent a back surgery, leaving the New England Patriots with four quarterback options. Cam Newton will probably start games in the 2021 NFL season. Jake Dolegala joined the Patriots a few years ago but he won’t really start games with the Patriots. He is here to add depth to the quarterback room. What about Brian Hoyer and rookie Mac Jones? Head coach Bill Belichick gave Hoyer a one-year deal to mentor the rookie.

A lot of analysts would agree that Jones looks like the Patriots’ franchise quarterback. He will have to work really hard to earn the position.

Brian Hoyer likes what he sees from Mac Jones

Patriots players had training camp practice and Hoyer decided to talk about his younger teammate. He watched Jones on the field and it seems like he likes the results.

“I said this in the spring, it’s not easy playing quarterback in the NFL. It’s not easy to play it here,” Hoyer said, as transcribed by Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard. “He works his butt off and he cares a lot. I am just there if he has a question, or if I see something that I can bring up with my past experiences and help him out because like I said, we’re starting in the toughest part of the field against what I would call arguably the toughest red-area defense in the league. It’s not going to be easy. You’re not going to go out there and go 9-for-10.

“Working one day at a time and you can see how much he puts into it. I get text messages from him at 6 a.m. He’s doing a great job.”

It looks like Jones is serious about his role with the Patriots.

Patriots players really like Jones and fans welcomed him with an applause. I guess Newton is doing an excellent job with the Patriots.

Belichick will have to make a big decision after training camp. He said Newton was his starting quarterback but a lot of things can change overnight. Maybe Jones will replace Newton at some point of the season.
