Report: Patriots Sign Hybrid Back Ty Montgomery To Two-Year Deal

The New England Patriots will be without some of the players of the 2021 roster. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made a few moves early in the offseason and he has just decided to sign a hybrid back.

CBS Sports Josina Anderson was among the first to report the signing of Ty Montgomery. The Patriots made only one outside acquisition in the first four days of free agency and added another player on Thursday. The Patriots are signing the running back/wide receiver to a two-year deal and he will get $4 million.

Patriots sign hybrid back to fill up a hole

Montgomery, 29, first joined the NFL as a third-rounder for the Green Bay Packers in the 2015. He spent the first three-and-a-half seasons of his time with the Packers. He was incredibly productive and he was definitely a versatile member of the Patriots offensive line.

The Packers used Montgomery as wide receiver and running back during his stint. He saw action in 39 games and recorded 309 touches for 1,844 yards and 12 touchdowns. Well, the Packers decided to part ways with Montgomery in 2018. He was traded to the Baltimore Ravens.

Montgomery spent half a season in Baltimore and then signed a deal with the New York Jets. He joined the New Orleans Saints after a season. He wasn’t as productive as he used to be and the team used him as a rotational player. Montgomery had a role in the kicking game as well.

In 2021, Montgomery had 44 rushing yards and 95 receiving yards. He also returned two kicks. The veteran didn’t return a punt this past season.

The Patriots made a move to re-sign running back James White earlier this week. However, Belichick lost a few valuable players in the early days of free agency. Brandon Bolden joined the Las Vegas Raiders and JC Jackson signed with the Los Angeles Chargers. That’s not all. Chase Winovich was traded to the Cleveland Browns. A few other players switched teams and took their talents somewhere else.

It’s a long offseason and the Patriots are expected to make a few more moves. Who is the next player to join the team?
