Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo Admits He ‘Misspoke’ During NFL Combine

The New England Patriots are rebuilding their roster and they already look different. Head coach Bill Belichick left the organization, leaving an empty spot for Jerod Mayo to take over. Head coach Mayo shared some details at the NFL Combine and he didn’t really need to do it all.

The Patriots have enough cap space ($77 million) to work with and they will definitely “burn some cash” in free agency, per Mayo.

“We’re bringing in talent, 1,000 percent,” Mayo said during an appearance on the Greg Hill Show. “Have a lot of cap space and cash. Ready to burn some cash.”

Mayo had different plans at the NFL Combine

The Patriots head coach seem to be taking a different approach. Now he says that the team won’t go too crazy in the offseason. Yes, they are saving some for later.

“You know, I kind of misspoke when I said ‘burn some cash’ but I was excited when you see those numbers,” Mayo said in an interview with MassLive. “But when you reflect on those numbers, you don’t have to spend all of it in one year.

“This is going to be a process. So I don’t want people to think, ‘you got $60 million, $70 million, whatever, so let’s get this guy, that guy, that guy … it may work for a couple games, or maybe a season, but it won’t work long term.”

The team has to fill some holes on the roster. They need quarterbacks and receivers. Getting an efficient quarterback and wide receiver is a priority for the team right now.

Jeff Howe from The Athletic reported that the Patriots plan to select a quarterback with the No.3 pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.

“The Patriots really want to draft a quarterback with the No. 3 pick,” Howe wrote. “The front office wrapped up its pre-free-agency meetings a week ago and seems to be on the same page that the best way to jump-start this rebuild and yield long-term success is to find a young quarterback in the NFL Draft to build around.”
