Patriots Robert Kraft Drops Truth On New England’s Free Agency Approach

The New England Patriots enter a really challenging season and have a lot to prove right now. Jerod Mayo will replace Bill Belichick as the Patriots head coach in 2024. He will work with a bunch of new players. The Patriots were really busy this offseason and tried to make the best moves in free agency.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft is well aware of the situation in New England. However, he believes that the team can secure great wins if everyone focuses on their priorities. Patience is of key importance right now and Kraft has high expectations from the current squad.

“Well, you know [success] is a function of, ‘Have we put the right people in place to make it happen?’ I’d like to think there will be a big improvement next year. That’s my hope. But we know we have to be patient,” Kraft said.

Patriots set up strong foundation in free agency

It may not be easy, but Kraft trusts his team. They have already accepted the challenge to lose Belichick and cannot lose much at this point. The coaching staff looks different as well, but Mayo and his assistants have great potential.

“I think we 20 have new coaches. Just to be able to integrate them into the system,” Kraft added. “I think Jerod has terrific people skills. And I think Eliot and Matt (Groh) have really good knowledge of our product and what has to be done.”

New England have the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They can either use it or trade down to take players that work well for their scheme. Mayo didn’t turn down any option.

“We have a chance to get really good personnel in this draft, and another thing, a position we’ve never been in before,” Kraft said.

Coaches and players have to do their job in order to avoid another catastrophe. The Patriots are coming off a disappointing season and Kraft was visibly frustrated at the end of the 2023 season. The team made all the necessary changes to make a reliable plan that will work in the long term.

“I’ve told [the coaches], ‘Look, I don’t want to do splashy things just to get attention and get good headlines one day.’ I want us to do things that are substantive for the short-term and long-term.”
