Watch: Belichick And Matt Petricia Embrace After Week 3 Game

Matt Patricia worked for quite some time with the Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and his team. That’s how he became the head coach of the Detroit Lions. The New England Patriots challenged the Lions for the first time since Patricia’s hit the sidelines.

One of the greatest moments was the time when the protege and his teacher greeted each other so that the latter could congratulate his student on his new team and his first win.

Matt Patricia spent eight years of his coaching career at the college level. In 2004, Belichick opened the NFL door for Patricia, and he took the position of an offensive assistant. He stayed at that spot for a few seasons, and developed into assistant offensive line coach. In 2006, Eric Mangini left New England to coach the New York Jets. This affected the defensive staff and Patricia became the linebackers coach under new coordinator Dean Pees. Pees left three years later, and Patricia became the team’s defensive play-caller. He earned the coordinator title that comes along the whole thing. Patricia was holding that position until Super Bowl 52.

He went to Detroit, and became the head coach. Patricia has turned the Lions into a huge organization that tries to emulate the Pats. They haven’t gained any success in this position, and the Lions entered the tilt with the Pats at 0-2. Building a team as strong as Belichick’s takes time. The Patriots head coach lost the first four games as head coach. Try to remember that. Patricia is still installing his identity, and Belichick is more than proud to see him winning games.

There’s no better feeling than knowing that your student is following your footsteps. Keep in mind that not every head coach gets the opportunity to say he’s beaten Bill Belichick.
