Malcolm Mitchell Sends Emotional Message To Patriots Fans After Retirement

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell decided to retire from the NFL five days ago. But, he came back to Boston to express his support for the Read With Malcolm literacy initiative.

Mitchell talked to ESPN’s Mike Reiss and other reporters at a South Boston school, and used the opportunity to deliver an emotional message to those who stood by him during his tenure with the Patriots.

“You know, I am not 100 percent sure where I will end up in life,” Mitchell said when asked if he had anything important to share. “With football, it is easy to see into the future and build an idea of where you want to end up. With that gone, it has been a little hazy to see where I will end up. But one thing I hope people in New England know is that I made sure I went out a Patriot.”

Mitchell was drafted in the fourth round out of Georgia in 2016. There were predictions suggesting that he will be an excellent rookie. He was an important player in the Patriots’ offense in the second half of the season as he was able to catch six passes for 70 yards in Super Bowl LI.

Mitchell had chronic knee injuries that “killed” his professional career. He had one preseason appearance in 2017, and was waived before the start of the 2018 campaign. The comeback win over the Atlanta Falcons was actually the last game he played in wearing the Patriots uniform.

“The New England Patriots. That’s the name of one of my guardian angels. I’ll love them forever,” Malcolm tweeted earlier in the season.

In August, Mitchell took to his account to deliver a message for the Patriots.

New England, thank you! My heart hurts, but I smile when thinking about all the love, support and patience you have given me. To the community this is not goodbye, it’s I’ll see you later. Go Pats!” he wrote in his Instagram post.
