Report: New England Patriots Hiring Former Linebacker To Coaching Staff

The New England Patriots lost Brian Flores to the Miami Dolphins in the offseason. The team lost the linebacker coach, and replaced his position as defensive coordinator with former Ohio State assistant coach Greg Schiano. Now they hired a familiar face and former linebacker to replace him.

New England hired Jerod Mayo to take the role of linebacker coach, as reported by Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston. We all remember Mayo for his tenure with the New England Patriots. He was selected in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft with the No. 10 overall pick out of the University of Tennessee.

Mayo was part of the Super Bowl XLIX squad in 2014. He totaled 808 tackles, 11 sacks, eight forced fumbles and three interceptions. In the postseason, he totaled 57 tackles, two quarterback hits and two forced fumbles.

He took to his Instagram account to confirm the hire.

Dear Friends, Family and Patriots Nation,

It is with great excitement, passion, and sense of purpose to share with you that I have accepted Coach Belichick’s offer to rejoin the New England Patriots as a Coach. I am eager to get started and work hard alongside so many of my former coaches and teammates, all who I know to be solely focused on maintaining the winning culture we have come to know as the Patriot Way. I want to thank my loved ones, The Kraft Family, Bill Belichick and most importantly my wife Chantel and our four children, for their constant support as we enter this exciting new chapter of our lives. LETS GOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! #lfg #i’mback #unfinishedbusiness #patriots

Mayo retired in February 2016 after being placed on season ending IR for the third consecutive season. He wandered around the area as an analyst for NBC Sports Boston and worked with Cuttan on the station’s Quick Slants show.
