New year, new mountain to climb… ?

Edelman has $1 million tied up in 2019 incentives, linked to 80 and 90 catches. The receiver has $2.5 million in 2020 incentives, set at 60, 70, 80 and 100 catches.

I’ve accomplished goals in the past,” Edelman said. “And when you do that, you set new goals. I’ve been blessed and fortunate to attain and reach a lot of my dreams, but I still have a lot of other things that I want to go for. Got a big chip on my shoulder still, and I look forward to coming out here and contributing to the team and working hard each day, helping younger guys.

“I love being here. I don’t want to be anywhere else, and I’m excited for this upcoming year. And I’m excited for this spring to work on our fundamentals and mold our team and keep it going. Honestly, I didn’t want to go anywhere, and I’m not going anywhere. So Boston, I’ll be back for a couple more.”

If you ask head coach Bill Belichick, he will say that it was more than obvious that Edelman would grow this big and successful.“He came to the Patriots [as a seventh-round draft pick in 2009] and caught passes, which he hadn’t done before; returned kicks, which he hadn’t done before; and played defense, which he hadn’t done before; in addition to cover kicks and all the other things in special teams.

“Nobody has worked harder in my career than Julian to develop his skills and his craft in a position — other than, I’d say, Steve Neal — other than Julian, because he really didn’t have any background in it. We put him on defense and put him against good players in the slot, and obviously, he’s excelled as a receiver for a player that had no real college background doing that.”
