Patriots Make Massive Cuts to Trim Roster Down to 80

The New England Patriots have followed the NFL guidelines regarding COVID-19, and now they have cut 9 players until now. NFL teams have to bring their teams down to 80. Who is the first to go? The Patriots have already released cornerback Lenzy Pipkins, and now they are making a few more cuts.

Safety Malik Gant, wide receiver Will Hastings, quarterback Brian Lewerke, safety Adarius Pickett, wide receiver Sean Riley, quarterback J’Mar Smith, linebacker Kyahva Tezino, defensive tackle Courtney Wallace and wide receiver Isaiah Zuber didn’t make the cuts.

Will Hastings

Seeing Hastings out of the team is a bit awkward. He is a former college teammate of second year quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Many thought that Hastings would build great chemistry with Stidham because of the time they spent together. Well, New England signed former Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and he will probably take the leading position in New England. This was one of the reasons the Patriots had to cut him. Maybe Hastings just had weak chances of making the roster.

Brian Lewerke and J’Mar Smith didn’t make the Patriots cuts

Lewerke and Smith were getting ready for training camp as they were supposed to compete for the third quarterback position. Newton’s signing changed this possibility. There was almost no chance for Lewerke or Smith to make the roster.

Kyahva Tezino

Patriots fans liked Tezino because of his success at San Diego State. It looks like he will find his home somewhere else.

Isaiah Zuber

Zuber had a really great chance to make the team. His athleticism was of great help for the Patriots, but they decided to move on with the other players of the group. Jeff Thomas had better chances to stay with the team.

It will be a wild run for every player on the Patriots roster. A lot of young talents will compete for a spot on Belichick’s roster. The Patriots head coach has to solve a few problems before adjusting his winning formula. First, he has to pick his next starting quarterback. That’s a priority. He will probably focus on the receiving unit. The linebackers need some help, too. The Patriots head coach has a few plans, and one of them will definitely work in the upcoming season.
