Patriots Rule Out Key WR For Week 1 vs. Dolphins

The New England Patriots are playing the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. It’s a tough game, but the Patriots decided to rule out a talented WR. Gunner Olszewski won’t see the beginning of his breakout season on Sunday as the team ruled him out of Sunday’s game due to a foot injury.

Olszewski was a key player in the Patriots passing game. Head coach Bill Belichick planned to use him as a kick and punt returner. The role on special teams would have been in place to relieve the load from veteran wideout Julian Edelman. The 34-year-old veteran has been treating his knee injury in training camp.

Olszewski won’t see action in the Week 1 game against the Patriots’ AFC East rivals. Coach Belichick and his staff will have to look for an option. They need help at receiver and return man.

Earlier this week, the team recalled running back J.J. Taylor. The Patriots signed the undrafted rookie right after the draft. Taylor had great moments in training camp but he didn’t make the active roster. Damien Harris and Beau Allen suffered injuries, leaving a couple of empty spots.

Taylor joined the main roster along with Cassh Maluia. He is on a good way to replace Olszewski as a punt and/or kick returner.

The Patriots will need a replacement after the decision to rule out the WR

The Patriots have to reach for second-round draft pick Kyle Dugger. He will probably make an impact from scrimmage, and analysts consider him one of the Patriots’ best athletes. Dugger was really successful returning kicks for Lenoire-Rhyne in college. New England may try to use these talents in Week 1.

Taylor and Dugger aren’t wide receivers. They can be of great help or the team in the return game, but they can’t fill in for Olszewski as receivers. Taylor may be an option for multiple positions.

Belichick may decide to look at the practice squad. Devin Ross and Isaiah Zuber were great in training camp. Well, Olszewski better come back fast otherwise the Patriots will be in serious trouble.
