Bill Belichick Makes Surprising Admission About New England Patriots 2020 Roster

Bill Belichick has made a very surprising admission about the Patriots 2020 roster. The Patriots are not looking very good right now. They have a lot of problems, especially on the offensive side of the ball. But there is still hope that they will be able to get back on track.

Belichick talked about what the team has been trying to do after being devastated by positive COVID tests.

“Today’s an important day in our preparation for the Broncos,” Belichick said. “We’ve had several days now of virtual meetings between the staff members and from the staff to the players. We’ve been able to cover a lot of things, but we haven’t spent any time together, so today’s our opportunity to do that. We look forward to that. One thing that we’ve learned this year repeatedly has been we have to be ready to adjust and adapt to changes and modifications and the way we do things and, in some cases, decisions that really come down to a very short amount of time that we have to be ready to adjust to.”

“So we’re certainly taking things day by day — probably hour by hour would be more accurate. We’ll just see how we progress and then as we find out more on our end, or if there are other things externally that we can’t control that, then we’ll deal with those as they come. That’s the way it’s been all year. I think our team and our players have done a good job of handling those adjustments, and we’ll continue to do that.”

But now he was asked about the team specifically. He had an interesting admission about the roster. Take a look.

“You’re right, Charlie,” Belichick replied, as transcribed by ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “We’re playing more young players than we’ve played in the past. A combination of reasons. We were pretty heavily invested in our team in the past few years. From a salary cap standpoint, we didn’t have much flexibility at all. I think that was obvious on the Cam Newton contract.”

“Then we had some opt-outs, so we lost some players there that would normally have given us significant amount of playtime,” Belichick continued. “And then like every year, a couple guys are banged up and we’ve missed some guys here and there in certain games. I think when you combine it all together, there is opportunity there, and some of that opportunity has gone to younger players.”

“Again, because of our cap situation — in this particular year, this is kind of the year that we’ve taken to, I would say, adjust our cap from the spending that we’ve had in accumulation of previous years. We just haven’t been able to have the kind of depth on our roster that we’ve had in some other years. That’s provided some more opportunity for younger players. So it’s a combination of all the reasons.”
