Bill Belichick Addresses Controversial Decisions In Patriots’ Loss To Bills

The New England Patriots finished Week 8 with a 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills, and head coach Bill Belichick will have to explain some of the controversial decisions he made during the game. Well, NFL analysts have recognized two controversial special teams decisions. What does Bill Belichick say about this? Not too much.

The legendary coach provided brief response for every question related to these decisions. His postgame news conference took a familiar turn, and Belichick didn’t bother too much to provide a lengthy answer.

Bill Belichick has the perfect excuse for his controversial decisions

The first decision happened in the final minute of the first half. Patriots players were facing third-and-1 with  12 seconds remaining on the half and had no timeouts. Coach Belichick decided to send out his field-goal unit instead of taking a shot in the end zone. Nick Folk converted from 33 yards out, and cut the Bills’ lead to 7-6 at the big break. Was this the right move for the team?

Reporters asked Belichick why he chose to kick on third down, and his response was brilliant.

“To ensure the three points,” the coach said.

According to Belichick, a throw into the end zone in that particular point of the game was “probably a low-percentage play.” A tackle in the field of play would have put an end to the half.

New England did the same in Week 4. Brian Hoyer’s sack prevented players from hitting a field goal in the second quarter.

Reporters asked veteran quarterback Cam Newton whether he was disappointed that the coach didn’t give the offense one more play in Week 8. “No, sir,” the 2015 NFL MVP said.

Belichick made another controversial call after running back Damien Harris scored a 22-yard touchdown to tie the contest late in the third quarter. New England decided to shock with an onside kick. However, players didn’t recover.

Coach Belichick ran nine straight running plays, capped the drive with a 2-yard TD by Josh Allen. The Bills got a 21-14 lead on this one.

It looks like Belichick was just “trying to make a positive play.”
