Patriots Reportedly Had ‘Formal Meeting’ With Sleeper Quarterback

Head coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots will have to fill up the void Tom Brady left behind last March. Cam Newton joined the team but he wasn’t a good fit for the team. The Patriots have a big question mark hovering above their quarterback position. We’ve been hearing a lot about Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson. Belichick can easily put up a good trade offer. However, these trades can’t happen overnight and Belichick has to do a lot of thinking right now.

NFL experts believe that the Patriots will select Mac Jones with the No.15 overall. Hopefully, he will still be available for Belichick’s team. What will happen if NFL teams select Jones with any of the earlier picks?

Jones was really good at the Senior Bowl this week. This performance sure increased his value on the market. In other words, NFL teams may be interested in getting Jones with the earlier picks of the NFL draft.

If Jones is gone by the time New England gets to select a player, Belichick will have to go somewhere else.

Patriots met their potential quarterback

According to Jim McBride, the Patriots organized a “formal meeting” with Wake Forest and Georgia’s Jamie Newman at the Senior Bowl. Newman may be a good fit for the Patriots at this point.

The quarterback spent his freshman, sophomore, and junior seasons at Wake Forest. He decided to go Georgia. However, the coronavirus did its thing and Newman opted-out of the 2020 season. Now he is getting ready for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Newman was great passer and athlete in this stretch. The 6-foot-4, 230-pounder has great athleticism but he struggles to deliver a deep ball.

The quarterback threw for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions as a junior. Newman was able to run for 574 yards and 6 touchdowns that year. His arm strength is not an issue and his athleticism makes him a great threat on the ground.

Is Newman the right player to replace TB12 in 2021? NFL scout Matt Miller likes Newman’s arm talent.

Newman has great talent

Here’s what The Draft Network wrote on Newman:

“Wake Forest quarterback Jamie Newman is a toolsy prospect with good size, arm strength, mobility, and poise. The Demon Deacons took full advantage of his dual-threat skill set, implementing spread concepts that afforded him simplified reads where if his first option wasn’t available, he would have the spacing available to use his legs. Wake Forest also featured plenty of quarterback power and designed runs that allowed him to keep the offense moving with his legs.

“Newman is a terrific athlete and a physical runner. As a passer, Newman has plenty of room for growth when it comes to accuracy, decision making, field vision, progressions, hitting throws with anticipation, and navigating the pocket. Newman should be viewed as a developmental quarterback but one that brings an exciting package of physical traits to the table. There shouldn’t be expectations that he will take the reins of an NFL offense early in his career, but packages could be created for him to take advantage of his skill set. If everything comes together, Newman has the makeup of an NFL starter, but he has a ways to go.”
