NFL Draft Analyst Discusses Possible First-Round Trade Involving Patriots

The New England Patriots agreed to trade one of their fifth-round picks to the Houston Texans. They entered the 2022 NFL season with two fifth-round picks. Another possible trade could give the Patriots a key player. Will Belichick make a move?

New England has the 21th overall pick in the upcoming draft. They have nine picks in the draft. Belichick will use the opportunity to get players at several positions. He needs linebackers and cornerbacks. The Patriots also need wide receivers.

Chad Reuter released his seven-round mock draft and made a few predictions for the Patriots draft moves. According to him, the Dallas Cowboys will get No.21 and send their No. 24 pick to the Patriots. New England will also get the fourth-rounder (No.129) and a fifth round pick (No.178). Reuter believes that the Cowboys will use their picks to get Northern Iowa offensive tackle Trevor Penning.

Possible mock draft relies on a trade between the Patriots and Cowboys

This mock draft suggests that the Patriots will get the No. 24 pick. Who will they get at this point? Reuter bets on Boston College offensive lineman Zion Johnson.

“The Patriots need help in the interior of their offensive line after trading Shaq Mason to Miami and losing Ted Karras in free agency. Johnson’s savvy play and mobility gives him the capability to step into the lineup right away, probably at guard for now and potentially at the pivot when David Andrews retires. The BC product also has experience at left tackle, which could come in handy if Isaiah Wynn misses time due to injury again.”

The Patriots have several major needs to address this offseason. They need a receiver. N’Keal Harry failed to make an impact in the last three seasons. Julian Edelman retired, leaving an empty spot on the roster.

Reuter suggests that the Patriots will use the No. 129 pick from Dallas to select Cincinnati edge rusher Myjai Sanders and the No.178 pick to select South Dakota State running back Pierre Strong.

The Patriots will probably make a few more moves ahead of the draft. They made one and Belichick will probably make a few more.
