College Coach Compares New Patriots Quarterback To Popular Hall Of Famer

The New England Patriots selected Mac Jones in the first-round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He is a really good option for the Patriots and many would agree that Jones is the Patriots quarterback of the future. Well, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made a shocking move and got a quarterback in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Why did Belichick select Bailey Zappe with the 137th overall pick? He already has Jones at center. WKU head coach Tyson Helton may have the answer. According to him, Zappe looks just like Drew Brees.

“Bailey reminds me a lot of Drew (Brees),” Helton told Patriots Wire. “Bailey is — coming out of college — kind of Drew Brees-ish. … Bailey has great anticipation. He sees it before it happens. And he has great accuracy, specifically deep ball accuracy. And those two things, you can’t teach.?

“All the really good quarterbacks — they can create. When things aren’t exactly right, they get you in the right play or they see things that are going to happen and they can kind of tell the future. They see it before it happens. You can watch Bailey early on with what we were doing offensively and he just had a great knack for being able to put the ball in places where you were like, ‘Wow, how did he see that?’ That’s what the good ones are able to do. He’s so smart. Before the ball is even snapped, he knows what’s going to happen.”

Patriots got another quarterback

Zappe may not even see any action in 2022. However, he adds nice depth to the quarterback unit. Yes, some may believe that Belichick is trying to address an underlying condition. Maybe this is just a rumor. Getting Zappe was definitely a shocking move, but Belichick has his reasons to do things. Robert Kraft trusts him for a reason.

Nick Wright doesn’t like the idea of seeing another quarterback on Belichick’s roster. He said that the Patriots may have problems that haven’t been discussed publicly. Patriots fans would never question Belichick’s draft day decision.
